Do Mumbai women hold liquor better than their male counterparts? BT explores

Ever seen a woman in a drunken brawl? Ever seen her losing self-control, picking fights and mouthing bad words after getting high? Not too often, you''re thinking. Wonder why? Because women can hold their drink better than men, or so says a recent study on drinking conducted by Kentucky University in US.
The study explains that men are three times more likely to lose their inhibitions than women with the same amount and concentration of alcohol in the blood. Also, men show two-and-half times more stimulation as against women who show a six times greater level of sedation.

Does this hold true in our city? Yes and no. Says Deepak (name changed), a bouncer in a popular suburban nightclub, "Men and women have a different attitude to drinking. Men think getting drunk is macho and women think it''s undignified to make a scene. Also, if a woman has too much to drink, there''s always a man to take care of her. It is rare that a woman will let go without a male escort."

But not everyone agrees with this in Mumbai. Especially bartenders who get a ringside view of drunken behaviour. Says Chandan Kaul, a bartender at a South Mumbai club, "Women might not get into brawls but I have seen many women get drunk and fight with their boyfriends." He believes that it is because of the competitive spirit in women. "Even in their drinking pattern, women try more shots whereas men prefer to stick to their regular drink. Women want to get higher faster, they dance on the bar top, they are more willing to let go than men," says Kaul.

Many suggest that women drink faster than men. Says Binu Sumughan, senior supervisor at a night club, "I believe it''s because women don''t want to hold glasses for long -- they have handbags, cellphones and stoles to hold! So they drink faster. On an average they hold their drinks better. Except when their boyfriends pay more attention to some other girl!"
